About

Hokoku-ji is a temple in the of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism located in Kamakura, Japan.  The temple is famous for the beautiful bamboo grove behind the temple's main hall.  Hokoku-ji's bamboo grove has over 2000 bamboo stalks.  A few beautiful pathways lead through the bamboo forest to a tea house.  At the tea house you can pay a small fee, sit and enjoy a cup of Green Tea (Matcha Tea) while gazing out upon the bamboo grove.  There are also some shallow caves behind the temple (at the temples west side) which are believed to hold the ashes of some of the later Ashikaga lords.

Established by founding priest Tengan Eko in 1334, Hokoku-ji temple is the family temple of both the Ashikaga and Uesugi clans.  The 1923 Great Kanto earthquake destroyed most of the original structures but Most of the temple structures were rebuilt.  Also near the bell tower, Gorinto (five-tier memorial towers) honor the thousands of warriors who were killed in the 1333 battle in Kamakura that marked the end of rule by the Hojo clan.
