The Yayoi Festival (in Japanese "Yayoi Matsuri" 弥生祭り) festival happens in Nikko at the Nikko Futarasan jinja and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Japan. It is a festival that signals the arrival of spring. The festival runs for 4 or 5 days (depending on the year) but the "Main Attraction" happens on April 17th. On the 17th there is a parade of gorgeous floats; "Flower Floats" (in Japanese "Hana Yatai" 花屋台). This festival has a long tradition dating back to the 8th century. When all the floats have gathered on the 17th, all the mayors and "heads" of those towns gather there to greet each other and exchange name cards.
