About

The Akasaka Hikawa Shrine, a branch of of the main Hikawa Shrine in Saitama City, is located in the area of Akasaka in the center of Tokyo and is where the primary spiritual guardian of the Akasaka district is enshrined. It is claimed that the original shrine was founded in 951, therefore it has a history of more than 1000 years. In 1716 the Shogun of the time commanded that the current shrine building be built and it has survived two major Tokyo fires and the WW2 bombings. The Akasaka Hikawa Shrine is not a "must see" destination if your on a "once-in-a-lifetime" trip to Japan but if your staying in Akasaka or Roppongi it would be a great place to stop by and visit for a morning or evening stroll. The shrine is isolated from the temporal world and is surrounded by deep green trees which keep the area very quiet and peaceful.
