Ginkaku-ji (in Japanese; "銀閣寺" which means in English, "Temple of the Silver Pavilion") is a Zen temple in Eastern foothills of Kyoto, Japan. It's "official" name is Jishou-ji (in Japanese; 慈照寺 which means in English "Temple of Shining Mercy"). Ginkaku-ji was originally built in 1482 as a place of rest and solitude during retirement for the Shogun of the time Ashikaga Yoshimasa. The grounds were modeled of his grandfather's retirement villa, Kinkaku-ji.
