Oshino Hakkai is a small "Theme Park" type attraction built specifically for tourists.  There are "Eight Ponds" (fed by snow milt from the slopes of Mt. Fuji), a small "Open Air Museum" (Hannoki Bayashi Shiryokan) with some traditional thatched rooms houses/farms and great views of Mt. Fuji for photo opportunities (depending on the weather of course).  The water in the ponds is famous for being extremely clear and clean because it filters down through porous layers of lava (they say for over 80 years!) before reaching the ponds.  There is a spot to actually drink this water directly from the source.  The ponds themselves contain a variety of fish and plant life which can be clearly seen from the edges of the ponds.

Around the ponds are various restaurants, souvenir shops and food vendors which sell products from the locals.  The "Open Air Museum" Hannoki Bayashi Shiryokan surrounds the largest pond and there is a small entrance fee to get in.  The traditional thatched roof farmhouses and Mt. Fuji far off in the background make for some great pictures.  Some of the farmhouses also display farming tools, samurai armor and some weapons of the feudal era.
