About

Atami Castle

Before you visit this attraction and think, "I'm going to see a real historical Japanese Castle!", note that Atami Castle is NOT a "real" historical castle. It was built in 1959 as a "Tourist Attraction".  That being said, it can be an interesting destination if you have spare time, are in area and are looking for something fun to do. The "Castle" sits on top of a mountain overlooking Atami city and the port of Atami making it quite a nice place for a great view of the area. During Cherry Blossom season the Castle Attraction is popular with local Japanese and also during many festivals when they shoot off fireworks in the bay, especially during the summer season.

View from Atami Castle

Inside the Castle visitors can see a small selection of Feudal Japan armor and swords along with being able to dress up in Edo Period costumes and solve Japanese riddles. There is also an excellent exhibit of 3-D Model Japanese Castles in Japan along with a variety of old pictures showing real castles in Japan. In the basement there is a game center and an "erotic" Ukiyo-e art gallery (adult gallery of erotic art). On the weekends the attraction may have various performers doing shows, the most popular being a Japanese monkey and trainer show. Next to the castle is a "Trick Art" museum.
