A fire festival, in which during the "Main Event" a fire is set on the volcanic Mt. Aso in the shape of the Japanese Kanji "Fire". The festival is called "Dai Himonji Yaki" or "Aso Hi Matsuri". Actually the entire festival takes place over the period of one month around Mt. Aso in Kyushu. Hills and plains are set on fire in order to maintain a good condition. About the same time there is another event going on called the Hifuri Shinji at the Ichinomiya Aso Shrine during mid-march. Once again "Fire" is the main theme where people light big torches and swing them around.
