About

Nagahama Castle in the fall by Oilstreet (GNU Free)

Nagahama Castle was built in 1575 by the one and only Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Japan's 2nd "Great Unifier". Previously Toyotomi had received Odani Castle from Tokugawa for being Tokugawa's ally but Odani Castle was far from town up on a hill making it difficult for Toyotomi to rule so he decided to build Nagahama Castle in the village of Imahama, also renaming the village to Nagahama (the "naga" part being part of Tokugawa's name). After Tokugawa became the supreme Shogun of Japan, Tokugawa ordered the destruction of Nagahama Castle because of his "one castle per province" policy. Some of the materials from the original Nagahama Castle were used to build Hikone Castle nearby.

Nagahama Castle is a "semi-faithful" reconstruction.  Very little of the actual original castle remains as most of the material was used in building Hikone and other structures in town. The town itself is very proud of it's heritage as Toyotimi Hideyoshi founded it.  The park the castle is in has hundreds of cherry trees and the park with the castle in the background makes quite a nice picture.  From the top of the re-constructed castle you can get a really nice view of Lake Biwa and the surrounding city.
