Nagamachi Samurai District (in Japanese, 長町) was a Samurai district near the former Kanazawa Castle. Samurai of the time were given massive amounts of land where they, their families and retainers could live. These residences still exist to this day (passed down generations) and the area along with these beautiful residences preserves a historic atmosphere of earthen walls, private entrance gates, narrow lanes and water canals. Being pristinely conserved, there is no place that will make you feel more like a figure in a painting from the Edo period.

One can easily loses track of time while strolling through narrow streets of the Nagamachi Samurai district. The shingle roofs and beautiful trees are also one of the remarkable sights that can be seen. Generally the streets are calm and quiet, rarely visited by tourists because this area is "off the beaten path" and not well known internationally. One of the main "Samurai Houses" attractions of the district is the centrally located Nomura-ke, a restored samurai residence displaying the lifestyle and artifacts of the era when samurai were prosperous. In contrast is the Shinise Kinenkan Museum, a restored pharmacy displaying the lives of the merchant class which rose in prosperity as the samurai declined.
