About

Nezu Shrine main hall

Nezu shrine is a Shinto shrine in Tokyo near the major city of Ueno. It is relatively unknown compared to most other major Shrines and temples in Tokyo like Meiji Shrine, Zojoji or Sensoji but Nezu shrine is a little hidden gem that is worth a visit. Nezu shrine is known as being a small yet beautiful little shrine, some people call it "Tokyo's most beautiful shrine". A few features that make the shrine so popular are it's many Tori Gates the surround the complex, the azalea bushes that bloom in the spring ( an Azalea Festival from early April until late May ) and an elegant, bright red wooden structure back behind a carp pond that makes for a gorgeous setting. If you visit on a regular 'ol weekday there will be very few people there and you can enjoy it's picturesque landscapes in relative peace and quiet.

Tori at Nezu Shrine

Legend states that the shrine was founded over 1,300 hundred years ago but a more recognized date for the foundation of the shrine is 1705 when it was moved to it's current location by Tokugawa Tsunayoshi (one of the Shoguns during the Edo Period). Nezu shrine is one of Tokyo's oldest shrines with most all the structures surviving all the major Tokyo historical fires and the air raid bombings of WW2. If your looking for an interesting place to visit in Tokyo and want to get away from the crowds, Nezu shrine is the perfect destination. Here you can find all the charm and beauty of some of the bigger more well-known spots as well as peace and tranquility. Sit by the Koi pond and take in the beautiful surroundings after a long walk through the many Tori Gates and visiting the main hall.
