This cozy live bar and night club has been a fixture on the Shibuya art and music scene for over a decade now. The Ruby Room may just be a small nook hidden in an alley in the center of Shibuya’s busy Dogenzaka district, but it virtually serves as a mecca for Tokyo's creative crowd where they could showcase their varied talents. It is where one goes to check out live performances of all kinds of music and DJs, a great mix of local and foreign acts, acoustic and electric, you never know who might get up on stage. The open mic night is the centerpiece event, one of the renowned and long-lasting open mic events in the city.
Entrance is mostly free which encourages the crowd to draw in and support their nightly performers, although weekends usually have a ¥1,000 cover charge with one drink. The bar has a full crew of friendly service staff.
Despite the seemingly unmindful care to style and space, this musical melting pot has enough charms to remain hugely popular among expats and club-loving Tokyoites.
The Ruby can also be reserved, with food catering if needed, as a venue great for special occasions as it is fully equipped for live-stage events.

From Hachiko Crossing in front of Shibuya station, go left up Dogenzaka street. Turn right in front of Shibuya 109. Take the first left (after a musical instrument store). Then take the first right at the brick building and go up the hill (not the stairs). Find Ruby Room on the second floor on your right, above a restaurant.
