About

Shinjuku Gyoen in Tokyo Japan by CarstenOtto (CC BY-SA 3.0)

Shinjuku Gyoen is one of Tokyo's largest and most popular parks and is right near the biggest city in the world!  By walking 10 or so minutes you can walk out of the biggest city in the world to a beautiful green and lush park. The park is especially popular during cherry blossom time and Autumn when the leaves turn orange and red although during spring and summer the park offers many flowers to view.

In the early 1770's the Shogun at the time gave the land that Shinjuku Gyoen is on to a Daimyo, Lord Naito.  The land become Lord Naito's residence and he started building the garden upon it. His garden was completed in 1772. After the Meiji Restoration the lands were turned into an experimental agricultural area and then a botanical garden before finally becoming an imperial garden in 1879.  The current "look" of the garden was completed in 1906 but completely destroyed during the Tokyo bombings in World War 2.  The garden was an important cultural asset so was quickly rebuilt after the war and in 1949 was opened to the public.  Originally the name was "National Park Shinjuku Gardens" but in 2001 the name was changed to "Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden".

Note about photography: Photography is restricted during high seasons, weekends, and holidays in Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. Applications are NOT acceptable during the periods.
