About

Mitama Hot Springs near Shinjuku, category - Hot Springs

Mitama Onsen (Hot Springs) is another one of the more popular "Day-Trip" type Hot Springs in Yamanashi Prefecture that is popular with Tokyo day trippers. It is slightly farther from Shinjuku Station in Tokyo (+ 30 min.) than Hottarakashi Onsen or the Fruit Spa Puku Puku Onsen AND you have to make an extra train connection BUT it is also considered a "nicer" onsen.  Mitama Onsen even made #6 on "The best Day Trip Onsens in Japan" in 2016.   Like Hottarakashi and PukuPuku Hot Springs, Mitama Onsen has great views of the valley below and of the mountains toward Mt. Fuji.  The many baths (indoor and outdoor) or incredibly clean, large and full of steamy hot mineral filled hot spring water.  They also have an "Ice Bath" (cold water bath) so you can cool yourself down from time to time in order to experience the hot baths much longer (the cold bath / hot bath alternation is also said to be great for circulation).

Mitama Hot Springs near Shinjuku, category - Hot Springs

Mitama Onsen can be reached in a couple/few hours from Tokyo by train and taxi.  Or, if you have a car it takes approximately the same amount of time depending on traffic conditions of course.  Although this onsen does not open super early like Hottarakashi Onsen when you can watch the sunrise, it does stay open quite late and the sunset / evening hour landscape below and beyond is quite calming and beautiful.  The restaurant at Mitama Onsen also has great reviews by it's patrons.

Notes:

  • Mitama Onsen is slightly further from Tokyo than Hottarakashi Onsen and Fruit Spa Puku Puku but is considered the "nicer" Onsen.
  • This onsen can get quite crowded on weekends and holidays so it's best to visit during a normal weekday.
  • You can purchase towels at the onsen (small fee; face towel 50 yen, Bath Towel 100 yen) or bring your own. They provide soap, shampoo, dryer, etc. everything else.
  • Male and Female baths are separate, this is NOT a mixed bathing facility.
  • You can get a massage, buy some gifts and or just relax in the "Relax Room" at Mitama Onsen.
