About

The front of Tokyo Station lit up at night

Tokyo Station is one of the largest stations in Tokyo on the main Yamanote Line loop train. Even though it is a huge "hub" and one of the largest stations in Tokyo, it is not the "Biggest" station in Tokyo in terms of daily foot-traffic but is said to be the busiest in terms of trains per day (over 3,000).  Tokyo Station is near the Imperial Palace, Ginza and sits in the business district of Chiyoda Ward. One of the main features of the station is that it is the main hub for "Bullet Trains" (in Japanese; Shinkansen "新幹線") that run west to Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka and North to Sendai and North West to Yamagata.

Tokyo Station was concieved in 1889 and the government decided to build the station near the Imperial Palace in 1908... although the First Sino Japanese war and Russo-Japanese War stalled the plans construction was finally completed in 1914. During WW2 most of the station was destroyed by B-29 firebombing but after the war the station was quickly rebuilt.  The station has gone through many changes, additions and re-constructions but parts of the original building still remain (mostly saved by preservationists).

Tokyo Station is a huge complex.  Of course there are the many different trains and lines but it also has business buildings, shopping malls and department stores. You could literally spends a couple days walking around the place and not see it all. It is quite amazing how everything manages to flow and keep pace throughout the day. A few interesting attraction you might want to see in Tokyo Station are Daimaru Tokyo, Tokyo Ramen Street, and Tokyo Character Street.
